After reading a review left by aikakone for me this morning, I got curious... Do you read the reviews of other stories (not your own)? How do they influence you, if at all? Have you ever NOT read a story because of the reviews? Are there certain people's reviews that you look for?I'll be the first to fess up...yes, I read reviews, yes, they influence me, yes, there are certain peoples reviews I look for, who's tastes are similar to my own...and yes, I have skipped reading a story if enough of the reviews are 'negative'. I've learned to weed out those who read everything and always review with the 'I love your story, update soon'. So am I the only one?

Yes, I read reviews of other stories. I feel protective (right word?) of Remus/Ginny fic, so I usually read the reviews of other ship stories. In part, I want to see if we're picking up any new audience members.
Quite often, even when reading fic that isn't R/G or HP at large, I read reviews FIRST. I think of it as a way to find out more information than just what the story summary tells me. Sometimes the reviews contain story spoilers, of course, but I am in general not spoiler-phobic.

This is probably going to end up sounding very... *cough* evil, but I read reviews first when it's an author I don't entirely trust.
This doesn't always work, though. For example, there is a writer in one of my favorite, not-HP fandoms that got rave reviews. I thought, "Oh, great! A good author!" and went and read all of her stuff...
And was very angry that the stupid reviewers were so stupid. (See, told you it sounded evil.) To give you an example of their stupidity...
In the fandom, there is a character from Manchester. The writer who is supposed to be something near to a <insert fandom's name here> goddess in the eyes of her reviewers, had said Machesterian character saying things like:
"Me thinks you should go talk to your brother," or
"Me don't know why me feels this way..."
Yeah. Also, there was a very composed character who went suicidal, and a man "single and looking" suddenly had a secret wife?
So... unless I know the writer is prone to *cough* bad material, I don't read the reviews just in case I get my balloon of hope punctured by the Big Shiny Needle of Bad Grammar/Spelling/Characterization.
Be careful, everyone. People are very misleading. *waggles eyebrows*
(...Haha. That was more of a rant than anything. Sorry. *coughs again*)

No, that doesn't sound evil mrsnilescrane, it makes perfect sense. Since I do, on a regular basis, check out the reviews of stories-I've read through the 3 pages of 'oh what a wonderful story, please update soon', and the 'oh, you are such a talented writer, can't wait for you to update' reviews, got to the story, and thought the link had taken me to the wrong place the story was SO BAD!
I guess now I look for 'deeper' reviews than the casual fangirl 'oh, that was sooooo good' stuff...but have often been misled. My back button gets a work out on some days.
